Rough Track #3: The Current

Shortly before the release of our two song record The Current & Cob and Pen, I announced a “Secret Word Contest” on this very blog. If someone sent me an e-mail containing a predetermined and undisclosed secret word, they would get a free copy of the new release in addition to some other goodies.

The secret word was PLEASE. I figured the first mildly polite correspondence would win the contest. It seemed fair.

No one submitted a winning entry, technically, but this one was the clear winner:

“What is the magic word, Doctor Venkman?”

-

Anyway, both “The Current” and “Cob and Pen” were written and recorded for War of Currents—the former a penultimate rocker and the latter an opener—but something about the progress of the other songs pushed these out of phase. I don’t know why, exactly, we kicked these off the LP, but we did.

Brett kept a record of my hubris for fun-poking purposes. Here is what he compiled, regarding the sequencing and release dates of War of Currents:

It’s crazy how many places this album has been.

April 4, 2008: “Album 3” was first discussed.

July 2, 2008:
GOLD FURY PT 1
ORNITHOPTERS
WOODPECKERS (FRANKENSTEIN VERSION)
THE FOLKLORIST (THE JOHNNY CASH/EX MODELS Am SPAZSONG)
GOLD FURY PT 2

August 21, 2008: the album was titled “War of Currents”

January 1, 2009 is a tentative release date.

January 12, 2009:
COB AND PEN
ORNITHOPTERS
BIRDS OF PARADISE
THE CURRENT
THE FOLKLORIST
THE SEAMSTRESS

April 27, 2009:
COB AND PEN
ORNITHOPTERS
BIRDS OF PARADISE
ONLY SOURCE OF LIGHT
BAD MAGICIANS
THE CURRENT
THE SEAMSTRESS

October 6, 2009 is a tentative release date.

February 15, 2010:
CAMERAS
ORNITHOPTERS
BIRDS OF PARADISE
MARSH BLOOD
ONLY SOURCE OF LIGHT
THE SEAMSTRESS
BAD MAGICIANS

This info is to compensate for the lack of insight into this version of “The Current”. We nixed a slower version and this is the first mix of the faster one that eventually saw release. It just doesn’t have a bunch of instrumentation yet. It sounds pretty solid, though.
