Rough Track #8: Grownups
We used a message board to discuss the songs as they were being constructed. Here are some excerpts concerning the latest mix of Grownups compared to the very first version of Grownups, found here:
Matt:
guess what i’m trying to say is that there is a such thing as overdoing a song, and especially with grownups we’re close to doing so. right now i would simply and easily put ROUGH1 on TDH rather than MIX9 just because it’s far more of a dagger. it does more by doing less.
Brett:
Yay!
I’m not the only one that thinks grownupsrough1 is the best
Thom:
grownupsrough1 isn’t bad… it just sounds like a demo. it wouldn’t fit on the record. it WOULD fit on some b-side comp thing. what i do like about it is that synth doesn’t let up. there is less dynamic and maybe that’s what makes the song good and dancey?
i sent grownupsROUGH1.mp3 as just grownups.mp3 to a buddy of mine: ”hey listen to this tell me what you think.” [attached: grownups.mp3]
his response:
“It’s good, catchy and stuff. It doesn’t sound done tho. you should probably redo the singing and put in more instruments.”
Brett:
GrownupsROUGH1 is a Dr. Pepper
Mix9 is a Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr. Pepper
I’d much rather just have a Dr. Pepper
Thom:
dr. pepper has TWENTY THREE different flavor elements.
Brett:
you ruined my metaphor
Thom:
kay i’m going to make a mix that is just plain old Dr Pepper but with some really really good ice cubes.
Dan:
one time my friend paul and i were recording guided by voices songs on four-track, not too long after we had met. later he told me he thought i was deliberately changing the songs’ melodies, but i actually thought i was singing it right.
